04 Sep Globalnet Foundation Conducts Fire Safety Education for Kumasi District Taxi Branch – GPRTU in Kumasi.
The Globalnet Foundation, in partnership with the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), has successfully conducted a fire safety education program for members of the Kumasi District Taxi Branch (GPRTU) at Regional Secretariat, Kumasi. This initiative forms part of the Foundation’s core commitment to promoting safety awareness, emergency response, and disaster preparedness within Ghana’s transport sector.
Empowering Drivers and Transport Leaders with Life-Saving Knowledge.
The session brought together executives, drivers, and members of the GPRTU Taxi Branch at the Secretariat to learn practical fire safety measures. The Fire Safety Education emphasized the urgent need for prevention, early response, and preparedness. Participants were taken through:
✓ Causes of vehicle and roadside fires (electrical faults, fuel leaks, overheating, and poor maintenance).
✓ Practical demonstrations on the use of fire extinguishers using the PASS method (Pull, Aim, Squeeze, Sweep).
✓ Emergency response techniques such as quickly alerting passengers, creating safety corridors, and contacting GNFS.
✓ The importance of each driver keeping a functional fire extinguisher in their vehicle.
Linking Training to Globalnet Foundation’s Five Core Pillars.
This exercise reflects Globalnet Foundation’s five core pillars:
.Provision of modern firefighting and rescue equipment: Supporting GNFS with resources to fight fires effectively.
• Safety education and training for communities and institutions: Empowering groups like GPRTU with knowledge to act during emergencies.
• Development of an Emergency Response Mobile App: To provide one-touch access to GNFS, Ambulance, and Police services.
• Establishment of community fire stations and reservoir systems ensuring quicker response and reliable water supply.
• National safety awareness and advocacy: Building a culture of safety across the nation.
Response from the Training
Leaders of the Kumasi District Taxi Branch – GPRTU, expressed appreciation to Globalnet Foundation and GNFS for prioritizing transport operators in safety programs. They emphasized that drivers, who transport thousands of passengers daily, must be prepared to handle emergencies that could otherwise endanger lives. A GNFS officer on-site reiterated that early detection and prompt action are crucial in reducing the damage caused by fire outbreaks, particularly in vehicles and crowded transport stations.
The Way Forward
Globalnet Foundation reaffirmed its commitment to extending similar training to markets, schools, churches, and other institutions across Ghana. The upcoming Emergency Response Mobile App will further complement such education by linking communities directly to safety agencies in real time. The Globalnet Foundation also appealed to the GPRTU executives to support the foundation to carry its core project. By equipping drivers with practical knowledge and promoting awareness, the Foundation believes Ghana can move closer to achieving its vision of resilient communities and a safer nation.
