Organized by Globalnet Foundation
Date: Friday, 17th October 2025
Location: F2 Hotel, Offinso- Ashanti Region
Partner: Ghana National Fire Service ( Boamang Fire Station)
Introduction
Globalnet Foundation, as part of its national campaign to promote fire safety and community resilience, organized an intensive fire safety education program at F2 Hotel in Offinso. The training was designed to equip hospitality staff with both theoretical knowledge and practical skills necessary to prevent, manage, and respond effectively to fire emergencies.
Objectives
- To raise awareness about fire hazards in hospitality settings
- To educate staff on fire classifications and appropriate extinguishing methods
- To train participants in safe evacuation procedures
- To introduce and demonstrate the use of fire safety equipment
- To promote the use of emergency response technology
Theory Session
1.Causes and Classes of Fire
Participants were introduced to the common causes of fire outbreaks, including electrical faults, flammable liquids, kitchen accidents, and negligence. The session emphasized the importance of identifying the type of fire in order to apply the correct extinguishing method. The five major classes of fire were explained as follows:
- Class A fires: involve solid combustibles such as wood, paper, and cloth. These are best extinguished using water-based, foam, or ABC dry chemical extinguishers.
- Class B fires: are caused by flammable liquids like petrol, oil, and paint. Foam, carbon dioxide (CO₂), and dry chemical extinguishers are recommended. Water must be avoided.
- Class C fires: originate from electrical sources such as appliances and wiring. CO₂ and dry chemical extinguishers are suitable due to their non-conductive properties.
- Class D fires: involve combustible metals like magnesium and titanium. These require specialized dry powder extinguishers.
- Class K fires: occur in kitchens and involve cooking oils and fats. Wet chemical extinguishers are the most effective for these fires.
2. Safe Evacuation Procedures
The training emphasized critical evacuation protocols, including:
- Remaining calm and alerting others
- Using stairways instead of elevators
- Checking doors for heat before opening
- Staying low to avoid smoke inhalation
- Following marked escape routes
- Assisting vulnerable individuals
- Never re-entering a burning building
3. Emergency Response App
Participants were introduced to Globalnet Foundation’s 112 Emergency Response App, a mobile platform designed to:
- Send real-time alerts for fire and other emergencies
- Share user location with responders
- Provide offline support in low-connectivity areas
Staff were guided through the app’s interface and trained on how to activate alerts during emergencies.
Practical Sessions
1. Fire Extinguisher Demonstration
Using the PASS method Pull, Aim, Squeeze, Sweep. Participants practiced extinguishing mock fires under supervision. This exercise-built confidence and familiarity with fire extinguishers.
2. Fire Blanket Demonstration
Fire blankets were demonstrated as essential tools for smothering small fires. Participants learned to:
- Release the blanket safely
- Protect their hands during deployment
- Cover the fire gently
- Leave the blanket in place until the fire is extinguished and cooled
3. Evacuation Drill
A full-scale evacuation drill was conducted. Fire alarms were triggered, and staff navigated designated escape routes while assisting others. A debriefing session followed to evaluate performance and reinforce best practices.
These projects reflect Globalnet’s holistic approach combining technology, education, and community engagement to create lasting change.
- Provision of advanced firefighting technologies: Providing a cutting-edge firefighting tools including fire extinguisher drones, rapid intervention vehicles, and advanced fire tunics to enhance emergency responses capabilities and protect firefighters.
- Fire safety education and training for communities and institutions: conducting practical fire safety education programs for communities, transport unions, schools, churches, offices, workplaces and market to promote awareness and prevention.
- Development of an emergency response mobile application: we are developing a digital emergency platform that connects citizens to safety agencies like Ghana national fire service, Ghana police, ambulance with one SOS alert. quick access to emergency service at the touch of a button.
- Establishment of community fire station and reservoirs systems: We work with the local authorities and partners to set up community fire stations and water reservoirs systems in underserved communities
- National safety awareness and advocacy: Beyond emergency responses, there must be continuous national awareness campaigns. the foundation seeks to work with radio stations, tv stations and all social media handles to sensitize the public, especially transport operators, on the risks of fire outbreaks, preventive practices, and reporting mechanisms. advocacy will also push for policies requiring functions fire extinguisher in all commercial trucks.
Conclusion
The fire safety education program at F2 Hotel was a successful and impactful initiative. By combining theory with practical experience, Globalnet Foundation empowered hospitality staff to respond effectively to fire emergencies. The Foundation remains committed to expanding its safety education programs across Ghana’s hospitality sector.
