Fire Safety Education at Apatrapa Health Center
Date: 10th February 2026
Organizers: Globalnet Foundation & Kwadaso Municipal Fire Command
Purpose of the Program
The fire safety education initiative was designed to raise awareness among staff, patients, and community members about preventing and responding to fire outbreaks. The training emphasized practical demonstrations and interactive learning to ensure participants could confidently apply safety measures in real-life situations.
Key Topics Covered
1. Classes of Fires
Participants were educated on the different categories of fires, classified based on the fuel source:
- Class A: Fires involving ordinary combustibles such as paper, wood, and cloth.
- Class B: Fires caused by flammable liquids like petrol, kerosene, and paints.
- Class C: Fires involving gases such as LPG.
- Class D: Fires involving combustible metals like magnesium and aluminum.
- Class E (Electrical): Fires originating from electrical equipment and wiring.
2. Methods of Extinguishing Fires
The facilitators explained various techniques for tackling fires safely:
- Cooling: Using water to lower the temperature of Class A fires.
- Smothering: Cutting off oxygen supply with foam, CO₂, or fire blankets.
- Starvation: Removing combustible materials from the fire’s reach.
- Chemical Inhibition: Using dry chemical powders to interrupt the combustion process.
3. Fire Extinguisher Demonstration
A practical session was held to show participants how to operate different types of extinguishers:
- CO₂ extinguishers
- Dry powder extinguishers or Multipurpose Fire extinguisher
The PASS technique was emphasized:
- Pull the pin
- Aim at the base of the fire
- Squeeze the handle
- Sweep side to side
4. Fire Blanket Demonstration
The team demonstrated how to use fire blankets to smother flames, particularly effective for kitchen fires and clothing fires. Participants practiced covering small fire sources to cut off oxygen supply.
Impact
The program enhanced fire safety knowledge among health workers and community members, equipping them with practical skills to prevent and respond to fire emergencies. The collaboration between Globalnet Foundation and Kwadaso Municipal Fire Command highlighted the importance of community-based safety education in protecting lives and property.
